A North Carolina family and congregation are mourning the Thursday death of Scott Hammett, the senior pastor of Clemmons First Baptist Church.

According to social media and news reports, and also a message of condolence from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina, Hammett was killed in a one-vehicle crash in Hickory, which is located about 60 miles west of Clemmons.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the church in Clemmons, according to an e-mail statement from CBFNC.
Hammett, 59, and his dog were pronounced dead at the scene of the afternoon crash, the Winston-Salem Journal reported. That report said Hammett was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.
The church posted a statement on Facebook today announcing their pastor’s death and reporting that he “was alone in the car with this dog and apparently something happened to him prior to the accident causing him to leave the road and hit a utility pole.”
The church added that Sunday school is canceled this weekend and that the congregation will meet at 10:30 a.m. to grieve and to lift up Hammett’s family.
