Jim Vaught, to Massaponax Baptist Church, Fredericksburg, Va., as interim pastor.

David Hill of Lynchburg, Va., to Derbyshire Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., as organist.

Joe C. Meador Jr., to Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Henrico, Va., as minister of young adults and youth.

Jessica and Joshua Hearne have been named new CBF personnel in Virginia. Already serving with Grace and Main, a ministry in Danville, Va., the Hearnes will focus on poverty and community development as CBF field personnel.

DEATHS

Retired Virginia Baptist minister Harold Franklin Carder died Feb. 13 in Brandon, Fla., at the age of 83. He had served several churches in Culpeper, Rappahannock and Madison counties. He was a retired school teacher with Fauquier County Schools. He is survived by his wife, Ann Latham Carder; three daughters, Jennifer Hightower, Beverly Hvidding and Martha Whorton; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. A memorial service was held Feb. 27 at Culpeper (Va.) Baptist Church.

J. Howard Cates, pastor emeritus of Fredericksburg (Va.) Baptist Church, died April 2 at the age of 93. He had served churches in North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia, and was pastor of Fredericksburg Baptist for 28 years. In retirement he was interim pastor in numerous churches. He was married to Hilda Mae Laughon for 42 years, then Betty Jo Gibson for 25 years, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by three sons, Jerry, David and Stephen Cates; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held April 10 at Fredericksburg Baptist.

Gerald Boyd Reeves, pastor of Kentuck Baptist Church, Ringgold, Va., died April 5 at the age of 65. He had previously served as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Dawson, Ga.; Potecasi (N.C.) Baptist Church; and Vandola Baptist Church in Danville, Va. He had served with the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board in France, the French West Indies and Montreal, Canada. He also served as a trustee of the IMB. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Day Reeves; two daughters, Alisha D. Samples and Luanne R. Davis; five grandchildren; two brothers; and an adopted daughter, Mandy Davis, and her son, Kameran Reidel. A funeral service was held April 10 at Kentuck Baptist Church.

Herman Wright Russell died on April 6 at the age of 65. He had served churches in South Carolina and Virginia and was a missionary in Malawi and on the staff of the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board for 28 years. He is survived by his brother, Jerry Russell; three children, Tina, Brad and Ryan; and eight grandchildren. A funeral was held April 10 at Bethany Place Baptist Church in Richmond, Va.

ORDINATIONS

Salem Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Va., ordained Thurman Robbins and Keith Chadwell to the ministry on Jan. 29. Robbins leads the congregation’s SoulCare counseling ministry. Chadwell preaches and teaches at the Rappahannock Regional Jail and is on the board of the Christian Brothers Transition Program.

Mike McMeniman was ordained to the ministry on April 15 by North Run Baptist Chuch, Glen Allen, Va.

Matthew D. Roberts, associate pastor for youth and children at First Baptist Church, Marion, N.C., was ordained to the ministry by the church on April 1.

Kudos

Tom Allen, minister of music and administration at First Baptist Church, Southern Pines, N.C., was awarded the Jack Naish Distinguished Christian Educator Award at the national CBF Churchworks! Conference in Norfolk, Va. Naish was the long-time minister of education at Wieuca Road Baptist Church in Atlanta. The award is given yearly to a distinguished Christian educator.
Virginia Darnell was elected chair of Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond’s board of trustees during its March 19-20 meeting. Darnell serves as deacon and historian at Richmond’s First Baptist Church. She succeeds David Hull, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Huntsville, Ala.

Dale Tadlock, associate pastor and minister to young adults and students at First Baptist Church, Waynesboro, Va., was elected the first president of the newly-formed Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Youth Ministry Network, during the national CBF Churchworks! Conference in Norfolk, Va. For the last year he served on the steering committee that organized and launched the Network. CBFYMN is a group of professional ministers who are called to work with youth and who relate to the CBF.

Oakland Baptist Church, Disputana, Va.; revival with Dwight Haynes, a chalk artist from Pulaski, Va., as evangelist.

SAT., APR. 28

Appomattox Baptist Association will host its 18th annual Super Senior Day at Falling River Baptist Church, Brookneal, Va. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with lunch at 12 noon. Roger Roller will be speaker.

SUN., APR. 29

Cobham Park Baptist Church, Warsaw, Va., is sponsoring a concert by gospel singer Ivan Parker at 6:30 p.m. at Richmond Country Elementary School in Warsaw. 

Grace Baptist Church, Williamsburg, Va., will host Christian musician Jason Burton in concert at 6 p.m. His wife, Kristi, will accompany him on the violin.

West End Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va., will celebrate its 130th anniversary. Special events are planned, including dinner on the grounds.

Fairystone Baptist Church, Stuart, Va.; prophecy conference led by Billy Martin. Special music nightly.

On mission

Beth Car Baptist Church, Halifax, Va., recently sponsored a unique outreach event. Prior to the beginning of Daylight Savings Time, members canvassed their neighborhoods distributing new batteries and encouraging residents to change the battery in their smoke detectors. This outreach touched over 60 homes and was a great way to be in touch with neighbors.
