DEATH
Retired Virginia Baptist minister Harold Franklin Carder died in Florida on Feb. 13 at the age of 83. He served several churches in Culpeper, Rappahannock and Madison counties, and had been a school teacher with the Fauquier County Schools. He is survived by his wife, Ann Latham Cardner; three daughters, Jennifer Hightower, Beverly Hvidding and Martha Whorton; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Kudos
Rusty Coram has assumed the coordinating role for V3, a church multiplication initiative supported in part by the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. Coram, who had been on V3’s board of directors, remains pastor of New Hope Church in Lorton, Va. Phil Faig, who has coordinated V3 since its inception in 2007, has transitioned to a role on the board of directors. Faig, pastor of Gayton Baptist Church in Richmond, said he wanted to spend more time focusing on his congregation.
Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham, Va., named Cadet Daniel Jonas as the Academy’s 2012 General Douglas MacArthur Award winner, which recognizes top leadership within the school.
Alex Welch, a senior music industry major at Chowan University, Murfreesboro, N.C. has been recognized as a first place winner in the Arnold Salop Memorial Composition Contest sponsored by the Southeastern Composers’ League. The SCL is an organization comprised of new classical and electronic art music composers and scholars located throughout the southeastern United States. Welch won the contest with a percussion trio entitled “Hypnogogia.”

WED., MARCH 8
First Baptist Church, Raleigh, N.C., will hold a 200th anniversary celebration at the state capitol. In 1801 the North Carolina General Assembly adopted a resolution that allowed “all regular Ministers of the Gospel, of any denomination whatever” to hold services in the state house until a Raleigh church could be built. On March 8, 1812, 23 men and women gathered there to establish the Raleigh Baptist Church. The celebration will be at 7 p.m. where the church began — the capitol. Molly T. Marshall, president and professor of theology and spiritual formation at Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Mo., will be guest speaker on Sunday, March 11.

Huguenot Road Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., will host the Annie Moses Band at its 8:45 and 11:15 a.m. services. The band will return for a 90-minute concert at 6 p.m. The concert is free.

The youth of Holland Baptist Church, Suffolk, Va., visited two college campuses over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The group stayed at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. They enjoyed fellowship at the Baptist collegiate ministries facility on the Tech campus before leaving for a two-night stay at Bluefield (Va.) College for its Winter Blast with worship, bands, skiing, snow tubing and with youth from around the state. “This was a great experience for the youth to see how they can connect and further their faith in Christ while discovering what’s out there after high school,” says Carol Warren, Holland Baptist’s youth leader. A ray of hope recently arrived in Henry County and Martinsville, Va., with the arrival of new blankets and coats. (Blanket America, a U.S. manufacturer of blankets has a “Buy 1, Give 1” campaign.) The new coats were welcomed by area schools that identified students coming to class during winter in short sleeves because they did not have a coat that fit. Pictured are children saying “Thanks” for their coats. The Henry County Baptist Association wants to thank Darrell Fletcher, field strategist for the Virginia Baptist Mission Board, for his involvement in this project.
