Virginia churches occupying facilities, leaving old ones

NewsJim White  |  March 3, 2012

RICHMOND, Va. — Several congregations in Virginia are occupying new facilties or leaving old ones.

• Acts 2 Church, Virginia Beach, Va., is now sharing the facilities of Renaissance Community Church, 5045 Indian River Rd. in Virginia Beach. The church was a plant from Bayview Baptist Church in Norfolk, Va., in the late 1990s. Rob Stevenson is pastor.

• Friendship Baptist Church, located at 410 Deacon Rd. in Fredericksburg, Va., has concluded its ministry. Its facilities have been purchased by the Virginia Baptist Extension Board and leased to Vision Community Church with the option to purchase. Fredericksburg International Christian Church will continue Bible study and worship there on Sunday afternoons. Ron Willis is senior pastor of Vision Community Church which held its first services in 2007.

• James Square Baptist Church, Williamsburg, Va., will re-dedicate its sanctuary and educational building on Sunday, March 11. Since August 2011 when Hurricane Irene damaged its buildings, a complete renovation has taken place. Among the enhancements are new pews, carpet, paint, roof and a lighted steeple. For the past six months the congregation has held services and church activities in the South Brunswick Community Center and the Gasburg Volunteer Life Squad Building.

• Pathway Church, Fredericksburg, Va., is now holding services on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of Liberty Lanes at Massaponax, 5801 Southpoint Center Blvd., Fredericksburg. The congregation previously met at Massaponax High School, but pastor David Hockney Jr. reports the new location will provide additional opportunities for ministry and activities.

• The Church at Clarendon, Arlington, Va., held its first worship service in its new facilities on March 4. Close to 10 years from the inception of the dream and approval by Arlington County officials, Clarendon’s View Building now offers 70 affordable and 46 market-rate apartments, a new sanctuary with a traditional steeple entrance and classrooms and office space on its second floor. Dedication and laying of the cornerstone are scheduled for May.
