OUT LOUD

NewsJim White  |  February 15, 2012

“When you are so prohibitively in debt to one particular lobbying group, that is a great concern. And it will be a great concern to many Southern Baptists because we believe gambling is a scourge. … And we certainly don’t want a president who is going to promote it.”
Richard Land
The president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission was expressing concern about presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s close ties to casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. He was quoted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“On that particular day, I was baptizing 858 people. … Along around 500, I thought, ‘We’re all fat.’ But I thought, ‘I’m fat, I’m a terrible model of this. I can’t expect our people to get in shape unless I do.”
Rick Warren
The pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., was describing to CNN the orgins of his church’s new emphasis on curbing obesity.

“You know, growing up a Baptist in the South I never thought I’d see the day when I would stand in front of several thousand people and say ‘We’re all Catholic.’ ”
Mike Huckabee
The former Republican presidential candidate, speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference, was expressing solidarity with Catholic bishops who oppose a plan to require some religious institutions to pay for their workers’ birth control.
