DEATHS
Marvin L. Gold died Jan. 23 at the age of 72. He had served over 26 churches in Virginia and North Carolina. He became chaplain at Southeastern General Hospital, Lumberton, N.C. in 1968 and in 1974 became the director of the department of pastoral care at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg, Va. He was a member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church, a diplomate in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and adjunct field faculty for doctoral students at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, N.C.; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky.; and Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N.J. In retirement he was assistant minister at Brunswick Islands Baptist Church, Supply, N.C., and member of the General Board of the North Carolina Baptist Convention. He is survived by his wife, Susannah Campbell Gold; two sons, Andrew and Paul Gold; a daughter, Courtney Gold. A celebration of life was held Feb. 3 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, Va.
Sara Parker, former president of Woman’s Missionary Union of North Carolina, died Jan 22 at the age of 93. She had received an honorary doctorate of humanities from Campbell University, Buies Creek, N.C. She had also served as a director of the Home Mission Board of the SBC and a trustee of Wingate (N.C.) College. She was predeceased by her husband, Leroy Parker, a former pastor in North Caroina. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Parker Adams and a son, William Andrew Parker. A celebration of life was held Jan. 28 at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, Greensboro, N.C.
Carlos Rosales, pastor of the Latino congregation at Chancellor Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Va., died Jan. 28. A memorial service was held Feb. 3 at First Baptist Church, Herndon, Va. He will be buried in El Salvador.
Kudos
The Charles B. Keesee Educational Fund of Martinsville, Va., has awarded $200,000 to Averett University in Danville, Va., for student scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year. The establishment of a Keesee Scholars Program celebrates the historic renewal of the relationship between Averett and the BGAV. The Keesee Scholars Program also exists at Bluefield College, Virginia Intermont College and Hargrave Military Academy.
Grundy (Va.) Baptist Church suffered the loss of its sanctuary and educational building to fire on Dec. 15. The congregation has now begun meeting at the Grundy United Methodist Church on Sundays, with both churches sharing the space.
Healing Our Hurts, Coping with Difficult Emotions is the latest book written by Daniel Bagby, Theodore F. Adams professor of pastoral care at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. Bagby also serves as interim associate pastor of pastoral care at River Road Church, Baptist in Richmond. The book may be ordered from by Smyth & Helwys Publishing, www.helwys.org.
RETIREMENTS
Sandford Beckett, retiring as associate director for NorthStar Church Network, after 17 years. A retirement celebration will be held Feb. 19 from 2-4 p.m. at Parkwood Baptist Church, Annandale, Va.
Phyllis Crane, retiring as mninister of education at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Raleigh, N.C., after having served there for 12 years.

C. K. Caldwell was ordained to the ministry by Faith Baptist Church, Hampton, Va., on Jan. 29.
K. Wayne Hast was ordained to the ministry by Dover Baptist Church, Manakin-Sabot, Va., in November.

MARTHA STEARNS MARSHALL MONTH OF PREACHING
Since 2007 Baptist Women in Ministry have encouraged Baptist churches to participate in the Martha Stearns Marshall Month of Preaching by having a woman preach during the month of February. This annual preaching month is named for Martha Stearns Marshall, an well-known 18th century Separate Baptist woman. This month Baptist Women in Ministry remember and honor Martha Stearns Marshall by celebrating the giftedness of the women who proclaim the good news from pulpits today.
