RETIREMENT

John W. Fox, retiring as pastor of congregational ministries at Belmont Baptist Church, Roanoke, Va. He had served as minister of education for three years and as pastor for congregational ministries for eight years.

ORDINATIONS

John Carroll was ordained to the ministry by Peace Haven Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, on Oct. 14.

Kris Clifford, minister to students at Columbia Baptist Church, Falls Church, Va., was ordained to the ministry by the church on Oct. 7.

Sharon Colgin, director of children’s ministry at Webber Memorial Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., was ordained to the ministry by the church on Sept. 5.

Rachel Johnson, ordained to the ministry by Calvary Baptist Church, Washington, D.C., on Oct. 7. She serves as an associate at the Eleison Group, a firm that provides faith-based outreach and consulting for political candidates, elected officials and other organizations.

Laura Smith, minister of music at Oak Forest Baptist Church, Chesterfield, Va., was ordained to the ministry by the church on Oct. 7.

Bluefield 5K challenge raises money for scholarships in memory of former student

Sixty-one runners and six walkers took part in Bluefield College’s fifth annual Jason Elswick Memorial Scholarship 5K Challenge on Sept. 15, racing for scholarships and to preserve the memory of former Bluefield College student Jason Elswick, who lost his life before earning a BC degree and fulfilling his dream of becoming a teacher. “It is our desire that many students with the same goals and wonderful characteristics as Jason be helped through this scholarship,” said David and Pam Elswick. Nick Whited of Bluefield, Va., earned the overall first place award with a time of 17:19. In the women’s division, first place overall went to Lindsey DeVaughn of Athens, W. Va. Lakewood Manor celebrates 35 years

The Virginia Baptist Homes Foundation is sponsoring a month-long heritage celebration in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of Lakewood Manor, one of four continuing care retirement communities operated by the Virginia Baptist Homes. The Virginia Baptist Homes Foundation’s sole purpose is to support the ministry of the Homes through fundraising to benefit the benevolent ministry and other needs of the four communities. The October heritage celebration will include: (1) “Reflections” to be presented by the Manor Singers; (2) “As We Remember Lakewood Manor” written by Alan Compton, Olive Crummett, Jane Ford, Millie Heltzer and Gil Piercy and produced by The Heritage Committee with photo timing by Sarah Griffin; (3) “Lakewood Manor Heritage Day Program” with speakers including: Wayne Varner; Randall Robinson, president and CEO of Virginia Baptist Homes; John Pearson, president of Lakewood Manor’s residents’ council; Jeff McInnis, executive director of Lakewood Manor; Mary Helen Simms Patterson, daughter of founding administrator Albert E. Simms Jr.; Mike Keck, Virginia Baptist Homes’ board of trustees; Patricia Morris, vice president of Virginia Baptist Homes Foundation; Anne Bailey, who will provide music for the program and Frank Schwall, chaplain for Lakewood Manor.
