Missions

The deacons of Wise (Va.) Baptist Church sponsored a “gasoline buydown” on Sat., Sept. 1. A $1,000 donation was made to lower the price of gasoline at a local gas station to help the community. A coupon for $5 off gasoline and an card with information on the church and a message, “In tough economic times, we want to show Jesus’ love in a practical way” was given to the first 200 cars pulling into the station. “It’s a way of saying that Wise Baptist Church is here and we care,” said pastor Mike Winters.

Pittsylvania Baptist Association’s Klothes 4 Kids sale on July 20 enabled 146 elementary school children from low-income families to receive new back-to-school clothes.

Virginia Intermont College

Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., hosted a campus-wide day of service in recognition of Labor Day, Sept. 3, which put student and staff hands to work serving the community. Over 200 members of the VI community participated in the event serving at Healing Hands, Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, Girls, Inc., Family Promise, Crisis Center and Habitat for Humanity. “The day of service was important because it exposed students to needs in the community and gave them an opportunity to implement what they’re learning in the classroom,” said Christina Patterson, VI chaplain. The Lady Cobras volleyball team served lunch at the Salvation Army and organized their food pantry and children’s toys. The men’s basketball team traveled to the Haven of Rest Rescue Mission, an organization that ministers to people’s needs for food, shelter, clothing, etc. The team cleaned the chapel, library and kitchen in appreciation for what the mission does daily for the people of Bristol. Other groups that participated in the day of service were men’s and women’s soccer, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, cycling, equine, and a handful of traditional students.
