ON THE MOVE

A retirement dinner was held for Dennis Knight, pastor of First Baptist Church, Martinsville, Va., on April 22. A portrait was commissioned in his honor and unveiled at the event. It was painted by local artist Karen Despot. He had served as pastor at First Baptist for 43 years. Pictured above is Knight and his wife, Sylvia.

RETIREMENTS

The members of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church, Roanoke, Va., recently participated in Mission:Possible, a day of tackling mission projects in need of caring hands. Volunteers helped at HopeTree Family Services with landscaping, cleaned the kitchen area in preparation for an open house at its Child Development Center and made centerpieces for CBFVA’s Mission on the Move. Kenneth W. Smith, to retire as pastor of Hardy Central Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., effective June 24, after having served as pastor of the church for 25 years.

Carol Kidd, retiring as accounting and systems manager at Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia, after 23 years of service to WMUV.

ORDINATIONS

Brad Erickson, ordained to the ministry by Wake Forest (N.C.) Baptist Church, on April 29.

Tiffany Slaughter, youth minister at Emmaus Baptist Church, Quinton, Va., will be ordained to the ministry by the church on May 27.

DEATH

Cecil Eugene McFarland died April 19 in Richmond, Va., at the age of 81. He was a United Methodist minister, a Navy chaplain and Goodwill Industries executive director. He  became executive director, later president, of Chaplain Service Prison Ministry of Virginia Inc., in 1995 and was in that position for 17 years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Riddle Roller McFarland; two children, Bob McFarland and Ann Collins; two granddaughters; two brothers and one half-brother. A memorial service was held April 28 at Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church in Richmond.

Talbot Park Baptist Church, Norfolk, Va., will celebrate its 60th anniversary.

First Baptist Church, Shelby, N.C.; 165th anniversary with dinner on the grounds; concert by The Envoys.

Lower Northampton Baptist Church, Cape Charles, Va., will host a celebration of life concert by Practicing Praise. A love offering will benefit the Accomac/Northampton Pregnancy Center.

Tabernacle Baptist Church, Salem, Va., will celebrate its 85th anniversary with homecoming at 10:30 a.m. A luncheon will be served afterward.

SUN.-WED., JUNE 10-13

Falling River Baptist Church, Brookneal, Va.; revival  with Joey Anthony, pastor of Midway Baptist Church, Phenix, Va., evangelist.

News

Mary M. G. Riddle, vice president of the Coca-Cola Company, addressed more than 250 graduates during Averett University’s commencement April 28 in Danville, Va. Riddle, a native of Java, Va., who was elected to the university’s board of trustees in 1994, is currently serving as chair of the board.

Mission

A mission team of 50 people from 13 churches in the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association recently traveled to Nickelsville, Va., to participate in the Southwest Virginia Partnership, focusing on Lee and Scott counties. Two days were spent at the Scott County Food Pantry in Gate City, Va., where volunteers sorted and packed bags of food for clients. Team members visited residents at the Ridgecrest Nursing Home in Duffield, Va., distributing tote bags with toiletries. Many volunteers worked with BookNet and visited 11 schools to provide free books, crafts and bags of toiletries.

Recently the woodcutting ministry of Mill Creek Baptist Church in Fincastle, Va., received a stockpile of trees harvested from a campground at the Peaks of Otter. Men from Mill Creek, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and 40 cadets from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., filled five dump trucks, four pickup trucks and two trailers with wood, which were delivered to the woodcutting area at the church. It will be cut in the fall and delivered to those in need who heat homes with wood.
