DEATH
Retired Virginia Baptist pastor R. Elton McDowell died Nov. 5 at the age of 96. He had served as pastor of a field of churches in Halifax and Pittsylvania counties. He was pastor of Upper Essex Baptist Church in Caret, Va.; Falling River Baptist Church in Brookneal, Va.; and Bethel Baptist Church in Phenix, Va. He served several churches as interim pastor, was named pastor emeritus by Falling River Baptist Church and was well-known as a revival speaker. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Harris McDowell; four daughters, Nancy Hartnett, Ann Perry, Patsy Morrison and Jo Ellen Hearn; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Nov. 8 at Falling River Baptist Church.
RETIREMENT
Whitey Davis will retire as pastor of Sharon Baptist Church, Green Bay, Va., effective Dec. 31.

Walnut Hills Baptist Church, Williamsburg, Va., held its annual Fall Free-For-All on Oct. 15. In three hours, 560 people were assisted in finding clothing, household items, electronics, linens, shoes, luggage, baby equipment/clothing, games, books, toys and much more. All of the gently used items were donated by church members and free to anyone in need of them. The slogan for the day was, “Take What You Need, Need What You Take.” An estimated 200 people were waiting for the doors to open at 8 a.m. Women of the church shared baked goods, juice and coffee with the shoppers. Greeters and shopping assistants were also on hand to make the morning an enjoyable event. Concord Baptist Association held a Stop Hunger Now packaging event on Sat., Sept. 17. Seventy-nine people registered to help pack almost 15,000 meals. Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world.
