Leland developing 'virtual campus.' The John Leland Center for Theological Studies in Falls Church, Va., is in the process of developing a new “virtual campus,” thanks to $267,000 in donations — including an anonymous gift of $200,000, the second largest in the school’s history. An integrated computer software package being installed includes modules for student information, finances and development, as well as portals for students and faculty. The online campus community will transform the way students, faculty, staff and friends interact with the school, said Leland president Mark Olson.
Disaster relief training. Virginia Baptists’ disaster relief ministries will host a training session June 3-4 at First Baptist Church in South Boston, Va. “Advance training is critical, because when a disaster hits, we don’t have time to train volunteers,” said Dean Miller, disaster relief coordinator. “We need to be ready.” The session will include training in mass feeding; recovery techniques, including chainsaw use and mudout; support service, such as water purification and shower and laundry units; and handling heavy equipment. Bluefield in Italy. Nine students from Bluefield College in Bluefield, Va., spent their spring break in Naples, Italy, leading street ministry projects, conducting prayer walks and engaging in street evangelism. The students at the Baptist-affiliated school also led a worship service in a city square, in which five people made professions of faith in Christ. Bluefield’s campus minister David Taylor led the students’ mission trip, part of the school’s focus on spiritual growth.
