RETIREMENT
Sanford R. Beckett has announced plans to retire as associate director of the NorthStar Church Network, effective Feb. 28, 2012. On that date he will complete 17 years of ministry there. He and his wife Diane plan to relocate to Kansas City, Missouri.

RECOGNITION
Jean Staylor was recently recognized for teaching Sunday school classes at Crewe (Va.) Baptist Church for 52 years. She has attended Crewe Baptist since enrolled in the Cradle Roll. Straylor and her husband, Pete, taught 3rd and 4th graders together for many years before his death. She was presented with gift certificates and a luncheon in her honor.

Deaths
Former Virginia Baptist minister Roy J. Harris died Sept. 30 at the age of 90. He had served four Virginia Baptist churches: Hardy Central Baptist Church, Richmond; Purcellville (Va.) Baptist Church; Emmanuel Baptist Church in Alexander, Va. and Red Bank Baptist Church, Nassawadox, Va. He is survived by his wife, Doris Flippen Harris; and four children, Robbie Harris Davis, Christine Harris Stinett, Holly Harris and James Harris.
Nash Andrew Odom died Oct. 3 in Lumberton, N.C., at the age of 78. He served churches in Florida, North Carolina and Virginia. He served as director of missions for the Petersburg Baptist Association, a position from which he retired. After retirement he served as interim at Calvary Baptist Church, Emporia, Va., and Crowder Memorial Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va. He is survived by his wife, Helen Allen Odom; three children, Penny Holland, Andrea Lewis and Christy Hamm; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held Oct. 8 at First Baptist Church, Lumberton, N.C.

Missions

Through October 8 the Spend Yourself® Gardens at Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, Va., had harvested and collected over 1,200 pounds of fresh produce for its Spend Yourself® Food Pantry during 2011. According to its Facebook page, 722 pounds of produce came from its garden, 30 pounds was from the children’s CDC earth boxes, 186 pounds was given by other community gardners and 264 pounds came from home gardeners. Columbia Baptist Church started two gardens during the spring of 2010 for the purpose of “demonstrating to our food pantry clients how to grow fresh vegetables and herbs on their own to supplement the grocery items they receive from the pantry” and to supply its pantry with limited herbs and vegetables to distribute through the pantry. The garden and food pantry is part of Columbia’s world hunger ministry with a mission to “spend ourselves helping the hungry in our community.”
Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Stafford, Va., held a clothing giveaway on Oct. 15. 1,900 bags of clothes, 600 sandwiches, 400 DVD copies of Facing the Giants and several boxes of Bibles were given the 1,112 people who attended.
