BTSR’s School of Christian Ministry schedules online courses to start in May

RICHMOND, Va. — Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond School of Christian Ministry announces four online courses beginning May 24 for which continuing education units are available for both clergy and lay leaders.

Theological Reflection SCM 1311. Examine the process of theological reflection as a tool for decision making in a local ministry context. Develop theological reflection skills relevant to decision making and choices made in individual ministry settings. Increase your understanding of your own “embedded” and “deliberative” theology. Course dates are May 24-June 20, 2010. Led by Betty Pugh Mills, pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Richmond. Learn more at scm.btsr.edu/SCM1311.

Expanding Your Preaching Repertoire SCM 8220. Increase your creativity and skills in preaching. Explore issues such as how the biblical text informs the choice of sermon form, how people can best hear the material in a particular sermon, and how to shape sermon moves. Dig deeper into how to prepare a variety of sermon forms. Course dates are May 24-June 20, 2010. Led by Tracy Hartman, associate professor of practical theology at BTSR. Hidden Lives of Congregations SCM 3222. Uncover the ways hidden life dynamics manifest themselves in your congregational setting. Examine the concepts of the nature of congregations as institution and community, church size and style, congregational lifespan, spirituality style, and congregational identity. Develop critical discernment in order to cultivate a more sophisticated and accurate understanding of your congregation. This course incorporates Bowen Family Systems Theory. Budgets, income statements, audits, bank reconciliations, IRS requirements, teller sheets, endowment funds, balance sheets, chart of accounts, designated funds, fiduciary responsibilities of lay and staff members, payment requests, deposit envelopes, arrgh! Are church finances are driving you crazy? Increase your understanding of church finance matters. Course dates are May 24-June 20, 2010. Led by Steve Law, church administrator, Bon Air Baptist Church, Richmond, and Barbara Morton, executive minister of church business administration, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Richmond.
