Donald Luzzatto’s editorial [“Governor’s decision risks state intrusion into religion,” Herald, May 13] asserts we are no longer a Christian nation. Most Americans have always believed we live in a Judaic-Christian nation. In a 2008 poll, about 85 percent of Americans identified themselves as Christian or Jewish. When this issue was raised last year, some Congressmen asked the obvious question. When did we stop being a Judaic-Christian nation?
Luzzatto believes that our Virginia governor wrongly overturned the ban to avoid sectarian prayer by the state police chaplains. Luzzatto says that we might offend others if we offer Christian prayers. Many Baptists would welcome being branded as offensive when others object to our Christian prayers.
