In the April 29 issue of the Religious Herald, an advertisement for the Safety Sentry trailer hitch locking device cited a new state law which the advertiser said requires locking devices on trailers to prevent accidental separation. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Virginia State Police say there is no law requiring a keyed lock and noted that most commercially built trailers already are equipped with lockable hitches that can be secured with a bolt or lockable pin. We encourage readers who are uncertain if their trailer hitches are in compliance with the law to check with state authorities before purchasing additional equipment.
