Deaths
Former Virginia Baptist pastor Charles Raymond Addington Sr. died July 30 in Bluefield at the age of 74. He had served as pastor of five Virginia Baptist churches, including Memorial Church in Bluefield. He was an administrator and professor at Bluefield College for 19 years. He is survived by his wife, Betty June Collins Addington; two daughters, Rebecca Gess and Martha Oblinger; a son, Charles Addington Jr.; four granddaughters; and four sisters. A funeral service was held at Parkview Church, Bluefield, on Aug. 3.
Nancy Ada Ferguson, wife of Virginia Baptist pastor Lester Ferguson, died Aug. 8. She was a charter member of Community Heights Church in Cedar Bluff and an active member of Brick Church, Castlewood. In addition to her husband she is survived by a daughter, Linda Slaughter; a grandson, Kevin; and a sister, Blanche Crabtree. A funeral service was held on Aug. 12 at Green Valley Church, Lebanon.
Retired pastor Charles O. Jenkins died July 28 at the age of 85. He had served as pastor of Northside Church in Richmond from 1970 to 1982. While under his leadership, a mission from Northside was constituted as Shalom Church, Mechanicsville, and Northside moved from Richmond to Mechanicsville. He also served as pastor of Old Powhatan Church, Powhatan, for more than 10 years and retired as pastor emeritus. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Waldrop Jenkins; four children, Charles Odell Jenkins Jr., Beverly Jean Jenkins, James Waldrop Jenkins and Charlotte Ann Jenkins; and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held July 31 at Northside Church, Mechanicsville.
Melvin Eugene Winters, former Virginia Baptist pastor, died Aug. 6 in Lynchburg. He had served as pastor of New Chapel Church in Rustburg and Flat Creek Church in Lynchburg, as well as churches in Mississippi and North Carolina. Winters was the first director of missions of Dan River Association and Appomattox Association. After retirement he became an intentional interim pastor, serving churches in North Carolina and Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Meekins Winters; a son, Kristopher C. Winters; a brother; and seven sisters. A funeral service was held Aug. 9 at New Chapel Church in Rustburg with burial in the church cemetery.
