Ordination
Joseph Louis Lear, associate pastor for youth and children at Crewe Church, Crewe, was ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on Jan. 22.
Retirement
James Flamming, pastor of First Church, Richmond, for 22 years has announced plans to retire as pastor, effective the end of 2006.
Church News
Cool Spring Church, Mechanicsville, will host a concert in drama and song by The Jeremiah People on Feb. 15 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The performance, entitled My Rules of Engagement, will look at issues faced by today's families. The concert is free.
Deaths
Eunice Shanko Carter died on Jan. 14 at the age of 91. She had served as organist at Tabernacle Church in Newport News for 34 years and prior to that as church pianist for 15 years. She is survived by two sons, Kenny Carter, minister of music at Powers Memorial Church in Hopewell and Don Carter, music director at Calvary Church, Portsmouth; and a daughter, June Highsmith. A funeral service was held Jan. 19 at Tabernacle Church in Newport News.
Retired Virginia Baptist pastor Gordon Douglas George Jr. died on Dec. 31 in Charlottesville at the age of 86. He was raised in the Northern Neck and served in many areas of Virginia including Culpeper, King George, Fauquier, Westmoreland, Madison and Middlesex counties. He is survived by his wife, Geneva Abbott George; five children, Joan G. Lohr, Arlene G. Umberger, Darlene G. Barron, Debra J. George and Gordon D. George III; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Jan. 4 at Bethel Church, Reva, with interment in the church cemetery.
Retired Virginia Baptist pastor John S. Moore died on Jan. 27 at the age of 87. He served as pastor of churches on the Pamplin field in Appomattox Association; Amherst Church, Amherst; and for 24 years as pastor of Manly Memorial Church in Lexington. He was editor of The Virginia Baptist Register, the annual journal of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society, for nearly 30 years. He was the author of several books including Meaningful Moments in Virginia Baptist Life, produced in 1973 for the BGAV's 150th anniversary. Moore served as president of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society; and in 1975-76, he was president of the Southern Baptist Historical Society. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha Paulette Moore. He is survived by three children, Sterling H. and John M. Moore and Paulette M. Catherwood; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A funeral service was held Jan. 31 at Second Church, Richmond.
Shirley Ann Bradley O'Brien died on Jan. 25 at the age of 69. She was the wife of Robert J. O'Brien and was retired after 38 years of service to Baptists in three states and Nairobi, Kenya, and the last 21 years with the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Eric Robert and Paul Brad-ley O'Brien; a sister; and two grandsons. A funeral service was held Jan. 28 at Midway Church in Amherst.
Charles Lindbergh Weatherford, pastor of Hamlin Church in Castlewood for 29 years, died on Jan. 2 in Kingsport, Tenn. at the age of 77. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn. Survivors include his son, Charles L. “Chuck” Weatherford Jr.; a daughter, Sandy Shelton; three grandsons and two brothers. A funeral service was held at the Carter-Trent Funeral Home in Kingsport on Jan. 4.
