James received his master of divinity in May 2006 from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond and holds a BA degree in international relations from Florida International University in Miami. In January 2006, he was named the tenth A.H. Newman Scholar of the Center for Baptist Studies from Mercer University and recently completed the VBMB's Young Leaders' Program.
Prior to joining Fork Union and serving as pastor, James was employed as a systems engineer/computer support specialist for various technology-based firms. He lived in El Salvador from 1971-1980 and has traveled internationally to Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and the People's Republic of China. He lives with his wife, the former Leslie Davis, and two daughters, Jordan and Evie, in Arvonia, but will be moving to Fork Union.
James brings to FUMA the belief that every Christian is called to minister through the exercise of his or her spiritual giftedness, and it is the responsibility of fellow Christians to encourage each other and help others determine their own spiritual gifts.
“I am excited about this new ministry opportunity,” he says. “The Cadet Corps is an exceptional group of young men, many of whom are seeking to form their own spiritual identity.” Other than teaching the required religion course, James also plans to organize a Bible study for cadets.
“James Benson is an outstanding, highly motivated young man who is excited about the ministry at FUMA to the young men entrusted to our care. The Lord continues to change lives by sending those totally committed to the gospel. James is a fine example,” said Lt.Gen. John Jackson, president of Fork Union Military Academy.
