Deaths
George Richmond Trotter, former Virginia Baptist pastor and missionary, died July 23 in Richmond at the age of 75. He had served as pastor of Winfree Memorial Church, Midlothian; Skinquarter Church, Moseley; and Dinwiddie Church, Dinwiddie. He and his wife, Martha, served as missionaries of the SBC Foreign Mission Board [now International Mission Board] in Indonesia from 1966-1979 and in Maucau 1981-1992. He is predeceased by a daughter, Rosella Trotter Long. He is survived by his wife, Martha Wilson Trotter; two sons, Richmond Seay Trotter and Joel Hale Trotter; seven grandchildren; a brother, Haynie Seay Trotter; and a sister, Anne Trotter Hull. A memorial service was held July 29 at Derbyshire Church in Richmond.
Retired Virginia Baptist pastor George Robert Marshall Rumney died Aug. 30 in Danville at the age of 95. He had served as pastor of Heritage and Glebe Landing churches in Middlesex County, Franklin Street Church in Lynchburg, Keen Street Church in Danville and First Church of Chase City. He is predeceased by his wife, Lucille May Johnson Rumney. He is survived by one son, Eugene J. Rumney; one daughter, Janet Elaine R. Koester; a brother, Howard Kenneth Rumney; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Sept. 2 at Rivermont Church, Danville.

Bob Smiddy, who served churches and the Dover Association in Virginia for more than 31 years, was awarded an honorary doctorate of divinity degree on Sept. 11 by the University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, Kentucky (affiliated with the Kentucky Baptist Convention). Bob and his wife live in Palm Harbor, Florida.
A Fall Community Clergy Workshop, “Body, Story and Illness,” featuring Mark E. Jensen, chaplain supervisor at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., will be held Sept. 28 from 9:00-11:30 a.m. in the Hoover Auditorium at the Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Chester Church, Chester, recently honored three ladies for dedicated service. Spencer “Sam” Moffett, Sunday school director, congratulated Mary “Beanie” Mays, a children's teacher since 1960; Ida Lumpkin, a homebound worker for over three decades; and Sara Foy Eanes, a nursery worker and director for 61 years.
