Three leaders draw kudos from BGAV, which also commends new Baptist media platform

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — A trio of Virginia Baptist leaders — a financial officer, a staff administrator and a veteran editor — were honored for distinguished service Nov. 13 by the Baptist General Association of Virginia, which also commended the upcoming merger of the Religious Herald and Associated Baptist Press for ensuring “a vibrant news source for all Virginia Baptists and beyond.”

In resolutions adopted at the BGAV’s annual meeting, participants expressed appreciation for:

Eddie Stratton, retiring after 11 years as treasurer of the BGAV and the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. “Eddie’s stewardship of the resources of the Virginia Baptist family bridged an economically challenging era,” noted the resolution.

Walter Harrow, retiring after six years as the Mission Board’s associate executive director and chief information officer. Harrow’s role as “staff shepherd” was enhanced by “his gift of gracious leadership and friendship to our Baptist communities in Virginia and beyond,” the resolution said.

Jim White, whose eight years as editor of the Religious Herald are coming to a close. “During years of change and transition, Jim White has provided stability and vision,” the resolution noted. “We recognize and celebrate Jim’s selfless leadership that has characterized his entire ministry.”

In a separate resolution of appreciation for annual meeting organizers and participants, the BGAV recognized a “historical moment in Virginia Baptist life,” as the 185-year-old Religious Herald and Associated Baptist Press launch a new media platform on Jan. 1.

“In these challenging times as we turn the page to a new chapter in reporting Baptist news to our churches, we commend the visionary work of the staff and board of the Religious Herald,” the resolution said. “The merger with Associated Baptist Press ensures a vibrant news source for all Virginia Baptists and beyond. The prayers and support of our Virginia Baptist family will continue to be with them.”
