Mission Board to sponsor church and clergy tax seminars

NewsReligious Herald  |  January 23, 2008

RICHMOND — A number of unique rules apply to churches and “ministers for tax purposes.” To help church staff and church lay leaders understand and comply with the tax laws, a series of church and clergy tax seminars sponsored by the financial support planning ministry of the Virginia Baptist Mission Board will be held across the state in February 2008.

The seminars are designed for ministers and for lay leaders who handle taxes and compensation for churches. Attendees will get help with the minister's tax return, following IRS guidelines in developing financial support for church staff, handling minister's taxes and federal reporting requirements for churches.

Jeff Cranford, financial support planning specialist in the board's empowering leaders team, will lead the conferences. Pete Wills, a certified public accountant, will assist in some seminar locations.

The seminars will begin at 10 a.m. and break for lunch at noon. After lunch there will be a question and answer session with seminar leaders. The schedule will end by 2 p.m.

Seminars will be held:

• Feb. 11 in Danville at the Pittsylvania Baptist Association office.

• Feb. 12 in South Hill at the Concord Baptist Association office.

• Feb. 18 in Abingdon at the Lebanon Baptist Association office.

• Feb. 19 in Roanoke at North Roanoke Baptist Church.

• Feb. 20 in Staunton at Memorial Baptist Church.

• Feb. 25 in Norfolk at the Norfolk Baptist Association office.

• Feb. 26 in Richmond at the Virginia Baptist Resource Center.

• Feb. 27 in Culpeper at Culpeper Baptist Church.

For information on the conferences or to register for the conference in your region, contact Raymond Cady, GuideStone administrative assistant, at 1-800-255-2428 or by email at raymond. [email protected]. The seminars are provided without charge through the Cooperative Mission gifts of Baptist General Association of Virginia churches.
