• Ginter Park Baptist Church in Richmond is partnering with the National Wildlife Federation as an official host for the 2008
Great American Backyard Campout. This is a national event on June 28-29 and Ginter Park is hosting what could be one of the largest sites in Virginia. The event begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, with activities, sports, games, mini-courses, a hot dog dinner, a beekeeper and entertainment. After dark campers will enjoy star gazing with the Richmond Astronomy Club, flashlight tag, songs around the fire pit and perhaps a performance by a local fire dancer. The National Wildlife Federation is providing $500 worth of camping gear to be given as prizes. Campers should bring their own tents and sleeping bags and will spend the night on the church grounds. The campout will close with an outdoor worship service at 8 a.m. Sunday. The event is free, but campers need to register by calling the church at 804-359-2475. Ginter Park will assist area churches in promoting and sponsoring the event. Posters or fliers, announcements for bulletins or newsletters and a speaker to help promote the event will be available. Youth groups and Scout troops are encouraged to join in. For information or to volunteer call the church office at 804-359-2475 or contact Elaine Lidholm, the event coordinator, at [email protected].
In the fall of 2005, it was suggested by Bill Young, son of charter members Belva and Vickie Young, that First Baptist Church of Collinsville place a tapestry on the wall near the southeast section of the church. After looking for tapestries, a member saw an article in the Religious Herald about a church that made its own tapestry. The members of First Baptist then decided to make a tapestry reflecting the Christians who had helped and are helping make it the place of worship that it is today. Members were asked to bring pieces of fabric having significance to them. Many people offered fabric from deceased charter and family members, fabrics from outfits worn or used on special occasions such as weddings, baptisms, births and church events. Members were asked to help cut the fabric and join in the weaving of a tribute to the work of God in the lives of the past and present members of the church. The ladies began meeting in the fall of 2006 to piece and sew. Nancy Doss Mayhew, carrying on the tradition of her mother, Mabel Mayhew, did the final quilting. Several men build a frame of wood from a slatted bench from the original church, Midway Baptist Church, donated from Taylor Lavinder's collection of church memorabilia. Pastor Larry Cheek led a service of dedication on Sunday, Feb. 3. The memories of past and present church members will remind the congregation of its heritage and encourage them as they carry on the ministry of First Baptist in the community.
