LYNCHBURG — Beautiful and inviting, Eagle Eyrie's new swimming pool was dedicated in a brief ceremony on Tuesday afternoon, July 15.
Both children and adults eyed the shimmering crystal clear water and waited patiently for the dedication to commence then conclude. Two little boys were overheard exchanging remarks prior to the ceremony:
“When can we get in?” asked the first.
“I don't know. First they gotta read the Bible over the pool,” intoned his companion.
The crestfallen face of the first gave evidence that the boy had sat through many long sermons in his time. He obviously had visions of spending all afternoon being denied the promise of aquatic fun. Almost prayerfully he asked, “How long will that take?”
But the dedication dignitaries were mindful of their congrega-
tion's wishes and provided a brief but dignified opening ceremony. Rod Miller, Eagle Eyrie director, introduced the architect and builder and read from Ecclesiastes 3:1-4, emphasizing that the pleasure the pool
would bring was “a time to dance!” Eddie Stratton offered a short prayer and John Upton provided remarks suitable for the occasion.
Upton and Stratton, who had offered little resistance to being snookered into being the first down the waterslide following the dedication, buoyantly climbed the tower to the top of the tubular slides and with the enthusiasm of boys, they swooshed their ways to the water below — much to the delight of onlookers.
For years to come generations of Virginia Baptists will know the joy of physical exercise and the pleasure of getting to know other Baptists from other parts of the Commonwealth as they enjoy the pool.
