CHURCH NEWS

• New Bridge Church, Sandston, broke ground for an addition to its fellowship hall on Nov. 23. The addition will include a music suite, prayer room, additional space for meetings and classrooms. When the project was proposed, an anonymous donor pledged to match the $550,000 goal, if it was reached by June 2009. Early pledges have exceeded $411,000.

• Thaxton Church, Thaxton, will have a worship celebration and dedication of its new Worship Center on Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. The 17,000-square foot building will include a large multi-purpose room with stage, a lobby, restrooms, café/meeting room, kitchen, elevator, media room and five classrooms.

DEATHS

• Karen Denise Croston died Nov. 18 in Suffolk. For the past 19 years she had served as minister of music at East End Church, Suffolk, where her husband, Mark A. Croston Sr. serves as senior pastor. She was the first African American consultant for church music and worship for the BGAV. She was a staff writer for The Church Musician, a publication of the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources). In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Candace Kamille and Mark Andrew Jr.; her father, William A. Johnson Sr.; three sisters; and two brothers. A celebration of life was held Nov. 22 at East End Church, Suffolk.

• Retired Virginia Baptist pastor Robert “Bob” Glazebrook died in Richmond on Nov. 14. He had served as pastor of Spring Hill Church, Ruckersville; Oakland Church, Gum Spring; Morattico Church, Kilmarnock; and Falmouth Church, Fredericksburg. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; a daughter, Deborah Dandridge; a son, Glenn Glazebrook; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. A memorial service was held Nov. 19 at Second Church, Richmond.

• Retired Virginia Baptist pastor Ernest E. Ozmore Jr. died Nov. 14. He was retired from the ministry after 41 years and a member of Bermuda Church, Chester. He is survived by his wife, Katie; three children, David W. Ozmore, Becky O. Liggitt and Cindy O. Mayes; and five grandchildren. A funeral service was held Nov. 17 at E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, Colonial Heights.

• Earl A. Scott died in Richmond on Nov. 18. He was active in Baptist life having served as president of the BGAV. He served as a trustee of the Religious Herald. Surviving are his wife, Catherine; a brother, Russell; five nieces and three nephews. A funeral service was held Nov. 20 at Woody Funeral Home in Richmond. (See Fred Anderson's column, pg. 4).
