Gardner-Webb University has named Nate Evans university president, making permanent the interim position he has held since February.
He previously served as vice president for advancement at the Boiling Springs, N.C., school affiliated with North Carolina Baptists.
The announcement was made to university faculty and staff Nov. 10 by Lamont Littlejohn, chairman of the trustee board.
Evans succeeds William M. Downs, who resigned as president of Gardner-Webb to become president of Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.
“Over the past eight months, President Evans has provided steady, mission-centered leadership during a pivotal period of transition — strengthening Gardner-Webb’s financial health, uniting our community and reaffirming our Christ-centered mission,” the trustees’ news release said. “Working closely with the university cabinet, he has led efforts that resulted in positive enrollment momentum, improved campus morale and the elimination of the university’s structural deficit.
“Under his leadership, Gardner-Webb has enhanced operational discipline, increased donor confidence and expanded strategic partnerships across the region. The university has secured major philanthropic commitments, including the largest single gift to Gardner-Webb in more than 25 years, while advancing initiatives that elevate the student experience and strengthen institutional excellence.”
Littlejohn added: “He has brought stability, unity and momentum during a time of transition, and the board has full confidence he will continue leading this university forward with wisdom and purpose.”
Evans outlined a five-year vision focused on growth, innovation and mission integrity. His plan includes expanding academic programs, deepening partnerships with churches and regional organizations, strengthening recruitment and retention, and investing in faculty and staff development.
Founded in 1905, the school today enrolls 3,000 students in undergraduate, graduate and online programs. Its nine colleges and schools offer more than 80 undergraduate and graduate major fields of study.
Gardner-Webb’s School of Divinity offers the master of divinity degree and the doctor of ministry degree.
