Last week, in an attempt to justify his military attack on the sovereign nation of Venezuela and the ensuing arrest of President Nicolás Maduro, Trump stated, “The Monroe Doctrine is a big deal, but we’ve superseded it by a lot, by a real lot. They now call it the Donroe document. American dominance in the Western Hemisphere will never be questioned again.” Adding the “D” for “Donald” is, of course, Trump’s inimitable way of declaring that he’s ratcheting up the political implications of the 1823 Monroe Doctrine and etching his own name into the history of U.S. expansionism.
