DEATHS

• Retired Virginia Baptist pastor James H. Alsop died July 21 at the age of 85. He had served as pastor of Samuel Harris Memorial Church, Chatham; Zion Church, Skippers; and Fort Trial Church, Stanleytown. He had served on the Virginia Baptist Mission Board and as moderator of the Henry County Association. He is survived by wife, Ann Curtis Alsop; a son, Mike Alsop; daughter, Charlotte Krovic; and four grandchildren. A memorial service was held July 24 at Fort Trial Church.

• Former Baptist General Association of Virginia president William Joseph “Bill” Hagood Jr.  died July 24 at the age of 91.  He was a physician with a family medical practice at Little Retreat Clinic in Clover for 44 years. He was a member of Clover Church, Clover, and served as president of the BGAV in 1965. He is preceded in death by his wife, Aileen Brillhart Hagood. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Scheper Hagood; three daughters, Dianne Lucy, Nancy Orth and Jean Chrismon; a son, Mark Hagood; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Aug. 1 at Clover Church, Clover.

• Retired Virginia Baptist pastor L. L. Schwemer  died May 24 at the age of 91. He had served as pastor of Sycamore Church, Stuart, and as moderator of the Blue Ridge Association. At the time of his death he was a member of Melrose Church, Roanoke. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Ruth Schwemer; two sons, David and Tim; two grandchildren; and a stepgranddaughter. Funeral services were held May 26 at Sycamore Church, Stuart, with interment in the church cemetery.

MISSIONS CAMP: A group from Williamsburg Baptist Church in Williamsburg attended Passport missions camp in Macon, Ga., July 13-17. They participated in projects including working at a local food bank, home repair, painting and yard work. OTHER

• Frank Schwall is now serving as chaplain at the Lakewood Manor Baptist Retirement Community in Richmond.

• Teachers Toolbox 2009 will be offered by The Resource Center in Richmond on Sat., Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First Church, Richmond. This is a workshop for teachers of all ages, pastors and other church leaders. Register by Sept. 4 at www.resourcingchurches.com.

• Steven Flowers, pastoral counselor at the Augusta League of Therapists in Waynesboro, was recently endorsed as pastoral counselor by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. The Fellowship has more than 600 endorsed chaplains and pastoral counselors.
