STAFF CHANGES

• Jim Rizer, now serving as pastor of Burrows Memorial Church, Norfolk.

• Matthew Tennant, to Kilmarnock Church, Kilmarnock, as pastor.

INSTALLATION: Dan Stanley was installed as pastor of Berryville Baptist Church in Berryville on Sept. 13. On hand were former pastor Julian Orrell and former interim pastor Dallas Stanley. The installation was combined with the celebration of the church’s 237th anniversary and the dedication of the new James Ireland Memorial Prayer Room.

• Allen Hopkins, to Pine Chapel Church, Hampton, as full-time pastor.

• Chris and Karen Harbin, concluding their ministry as co-pastors of Central Church, Lowesville.

• Mark Olson, to Downtown Church, Alexandria, as interim pastor.

• William P. Tuck, to Cool Spring Church, Mechanicsville, as intentional interim pastor.

• Woodland Holmes, to First Church, Harmony Grove, Topping, as interim pastor.

• Carl Peace, to Emmanuel Church, Alexandria, as minister to youth and children.

• Kristen Taylor, to Sandston Church, Sandston, as part-time minister of youth and families.

• Ben Sturgis, resigning as minister of children, youth and families at First Church, Collinsville.

• Bonnie Sohn, to Sandston Church, Sandston, as part-time minister of children and families.

ORDINATIONS

• Adam Phleger, minister of youth at Goochland Church, Goochland, was ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on Oct. 4.

APPRECIATION: Velma Wharton recently presented several members of Bruington Baptist Church in Bruington with gifts of appreciation for years of service to the church. Those honored were James Croxton, Sunday school superintendent for 23 years; Elaine Eades, treasurer for 21 years; John Samuel Prince, custodian for 37 years; Caroline Jones, Sunday school teacher for 50 years; and William Gwathmey, Sunday school teacher for 38 years.

• Welford Orrock, minister of students at Second Church, Richmond, will be ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on Oct. 25.

RETIREMENTS

• Anne Tomas has retired as pastor of missions and evangelism at Columbia Church, Falls Church, after serving there for 13 years.

• Allen Hopkins has retired as pastor of Carrow Chuch, Virginia Beach.

• John Sheppard has retired as pastor of Community Fellowship Church, Gate City.

DEATH

• Former Virginia Baptist pastor Cecil G. Irwin Sr. died Sept. 25 in Roanoke. He had served as pastor of Crystal Springs Church, Roanoke, and churches in Georgia, Indiana and Kentucky. He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann Irwin; a daughter, Vicki Smith; a son, Cecil Irwin Jr.; and three grandsons. A memorial service was held Sept. 29 at Grandin Court Church, Roanoke.

CHURCH NEWS

• Orange Church, Orange, will host the Miller Trio in concert on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. The trio consists of Bill Miller, minister of music at Second Church, Richmond; Alan Miller, minister of worship and music at Orange Church; and Brent Miller, headmaster at Carmel Christian Academy at Carmel Church. They will be accompanied by Russell Wilson, pianist for the Richmond Symphony.

• Fairwood-Agapé Church, Portsmoth, will host the Gospel Harmoneers in concert Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.

HOMECOMINGS / REVIVALS

• First Church, Front Royal; 170th anniversary; homecoming Nov. 8; pastor emeritus John Oliver, guest speaker; lunch following; dedication of Memorial Board and renovated historical room in memory of Bessie Brown.

• Gloucester Point Church, Gloucester; 50th anniversary Oct. 25; Mike Haywood and Jack Patterson, guest speakers; luncheon following; special music at 2 p.m.

• Kentuck Church, Ringgold; homecoming Oct 25; David Henry, guest speaker; revival Nov. 1-4; Jerry Reeves, evangelist.

• Maple Grove Church, Coeburn; revival Nov. 12-14; Jeremiah Sluss and Carol Childress, evangelists.

• Mt. Tabor Church, Keeling; renewal services Nov. 1-4; Rick Lancaster, evangelist.

• Stanardsville Church, Stanardsville; revival Oct. 25-28; Dale Riddle, evangelist.

• United Church, Danville; revival Nov. 8-11; Rick Via, evangelist.

OTHER

• Henry V. Langford recently celebrated his 70th anniversary of ordination to the gospel ministry by his home church, First Baptist, Madison, Florida.

• Kevin James will celebrate his 20th year as pastor of Salem Church, Sparta, on Oct. 25.

MISSION MOMENTS: Three teams from Broadus Memorial Baptist Church in Mechanicsville went on mission last July. Members were part of a children’s ministry team traveling to Interlaken, Switzerland, to serve during the annual assembly of the International Baptist Convention. Twelve youth and minister of youth, Jimmy Sanford, participated in World Changers in North Carolina and spent a week putting a roof on homes in that area. And an intergenerational mission team went to

 Roanoke where Vacation Bible Schools were conducted at Mountain Pass Baptist Church and the Baptist Community Center/17th Street Baptist Church in inner city Roanoke. Thirty children, youth and adults lead the Bible schools, taught adult Bible studies and re-roofed half of the 17th Street Baptist Church.
