DEATHS

Kenneth B. Bryan, a retired Virginia Baptist minister, died Oct. 25 in Marietta, Ga., following a brief illness. A native of Richmond, his Virginia pastorates included Second Branch Baptist Church, Chesterfield; Sandston Baptist Church; First Baptist Church, Petersburg; First Baptist Church, Lynchburg; and Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Danville. He is survived by his wife, Lucille; three sons and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be planned for the spring in Virginia.

Juan Carlos Gascon Sr., pastor of Iglesia Hispana Bautista Anastasis, died Oct. 27 at the age of 53. This Hispanic congregation in the Southside Baptist Association met at Kenbridge (Va.) Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Connie; sons, J.C. and Jonathan Gascon and a large extended family. A funeral service was held Nov. 1 at Kenbridge Baptist Church.

News

Averett University, Danville, Va., has announced it will host a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence from Kazakhstan for the 2014-14 academic year. Professor Sholpan Gaisins, an expert in business and economics, teaches at KIMEP University’s Bang College of Business in Kazakhstan. She will arrive in Danville in mid-August.

Danville Regional Medical Center and LifePoint Hospitals recently pledged $360,000 to Averett University’s nursing program over the next five years, to provide a total of 36 scholarships ($10,000 each) for DRMC registered nurses who wish to pursue a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree at Averett. In 2011 DRMC and LifePoint also pledged $500,000 over three years to Averett’s health sciences initiatives, which supported the development of the RN to BSN program.
