We’ve been told over and over that many of those who laugh at Donald Trump’s outrageous behavior and overlook his perpetual lying and callous cruelty do so because they love how angry it makes “liberals” like me. They will do anything to “own the libs.”
This is sick and twisted and disgusting — especially when the actual lives of people hang in the balance both at home and abroad. If you get your jollies from watching Trump berate reporters and catcall opponents and take food away from babies, you are seriously maladjusted and need immediate care. You are not well emotionally or spiritually.

And to be clear, this is a uniquely conservative ailment. There is no parallel on the left of desiring to “own the cons” so much that we laugh at depravity.
The list of outrageous things Trump does and says grows by the hour, and yet his supporters will not back down, will not admit how wretchedly he behaves and the real damage it does.
I’m writing now to those of you who have been Trump supporters but still have a conscience somewhere deep inside you. It’s time for you to wake up. It’s time for you to speak up. The world needs you to wipe the smirk off your face and put aside your hatred for Democrats long enough to save the nation from imminent threat.
I’ve noticed even most complementarian men see things differently when forced to defend their own daughters. They can overlook the mistreatment of women in general but not the specific mistreatment of their daughters.

So imagine NBC reporter Kristen Welker is your daughter. Imagine your daughter interviews the president of the United State on national TV and gets treated like dirt. Imagine your daughter dares to ask a powerful man why he continues to spread demonstrably false information about elections and the January 6 rioters. And imagine the president of the United States berating your daughter, calling her “crooked” and then storming off the set but stopping to pat her on the shoulder.
Dear conservative father: How would you feel if this were your daughter? Would you still praise Donald Trump for “owning the libs”? Would you feel OK about a creepy old man with a history of sexual assault touching your daughter anywhere at all? Would you laugh off his self-serving lies intended to make your daughter look foolish?

This is just another in a long line of stories of Trump abusing and maligning reporters — especially female reporters. And yet the same males who love to talk about threatening teenage boys taking their daughters on dates can’t be bothered to come to the defense of these professional adult women because they do not see them as women but as “liberals” deserving of derision.
It is time for you to own the words and actions of your president who is not fit for office and who you wouldn’t let near your own daughter. You can own the libs another day. Right now, we need you to defend America’s daughters.
