RICHMOND — Two Virginians have been named to the Southern Baptist Convention's 2007-2008 committee on nominations, Baptist Press has reported.
The powerful committee — which nominates people to serve on the convention's boards, commissions and committees — will present its slate of nominees to the 2008 SBC annual meeting in Indianapolis, where messengers will be asked for approval.
The two Virginia members are Steve Tyree, pastor of Elon Baptist Church in Madison Heights, and Norman Neal, a lay member of Smith Memorial Baptist Church in Williamsburg. Elon Baptist is affiliated uniquely with the Baptist General Association of Virginia; Smith Memorial is uniquely aligned with the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia.
The 70-member committee on nominations is made up of two people – one in church-related vocational work and one layperson — from the 35 state Baptist conventions which partner with the SBC. The committee is selected by the SBC's committee on committees, which is named by the current SBC president.
