The Dan River Baptist Association held its third annual Walk-a-Thon for HopeTree Family Services on Sunday, June 10. In excess of $4,000 was given, and approximately 100 people gathered to express love and support for children and teens in crisis situations and adults with developmental disabilities.

• Twenty-five students with Virginia ties were awarded degrees from the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond on May 24. • Twenty-three students with Virginia ties received degrees from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. on May 25. Receiving bachelor of arts degrees were: Daniel Achten of Smithfield; Carl Boyer of Norfolk; Mark Dunn of Chase City; Paige Fender Laughlin of Colonial Heights; Jennifer Mann of Brookneal; Michael Sterlachini Jr. of Virginia Beach; Benny Stiltner of Abingdon; and James Yacovelli of Blackstone. Receiving master of arts degrees were: Alan DeFriese of Smithfield; Zachary Scarlett of Forest; Michael Sexton of Colonial Heights; and Robert Thomas of Roanoke. • Two students with Virginia ties received degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 18. Stuart James of Mechanicsville received the master of divinity degree and Robert Carpenter of Virginia Beach received the doctor of ministry degree.
• Dan Carlton, pastor of Spring Hill Church in Ruckersville, has received a doctor of ministry in the renewal of the church for mission degree from Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University.
ORDINATION
• Malcolm Jordan, associate pastor for youth and community ministries at Chesterfield Church, Moseley, was ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on June 3.
CHURCH EVENTS
• Salem Church, Sparta, will celebrate its 205th anniversary on July 15 at 10:30 a.m. Steve Jones will be guest speaker and dinner will be served following the service.
• Liberty Church, Stanardsville, celebrated its 175th anniversary on June 24. Perry Clore was guest speaker.
• Pisgah Church, Rice, will celebrate its 150th anniversary with homecoming on July 15. John Upton, executive director of the BGAV, will speak at the 10:45 a.m. service. Lunch will be provided.
• James Square Church, Lawrenceville, will celebrate homecoming on July 8. The 11 a.m. service will be followed by dinner on the grounds. Revival services will be held July 9-11 with Frank Duncan as guest evangelist.
• Monument Heights Church, Richmond, will hold a “Celebration of Freedom” event on Sunday, July 1, which will include a “Sweet Land of Liberty” patriotic concert and recognition of veterans at 11 a.m., and a picnic lunch and water games following the 11 a.m. service.
MISSIONS MOMENT
Buckingham Baptist Church, New Canton
The Ladies on Mission at Buckingham Baptist Church make lap quilts for shut-ins with wheelchairs and in the local nursing homes. Over 38 quilts have been completed. When the sewn quilts are finished, quantities of Brunswick stew or chili are made to be distributed with the quilts.
