British Baptist minister faces sexual-battery charges

NewsABPnews  |  September 30, 2010

FAIRFAX, Va. (ABP) — A former British Baptist minister jailed in Virginia on molestation charges made a court appearance Sept. 23.

Robert Dando

Robert Dando, former pastor of Worcester Park Baptist Church in Surrey, United Kingdom, is being held without bond on four counts of aggravated sexual battery of a minor under 13, said First Lt. Sonny Cachuela, public information officer with the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office.

Dando was arrested July 24 in Oakton, Va., while visiting the United States. At his preliminary court hearing, his next court date was set for Oct. 18 in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Dando, 46, is accused of sexually abusing two boys, starting when they were ages 7 and 8, over a period of five years during visits to a family friend in the United States. Police say the first alleged victim, now 21, came forward in December, and after investigation they discovered a second victim, age 17, who claimed abuse under similar circumstances.

Dando, who resigned as pastor of Worcester Park Baptist Church following his arrest, is a former volunteer executive assistant to former Baptist World Alliance President David Coffey.
