WACO, Texas (ABP) – The alumni association of Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary announced Nov. 14 they will establish an endowed scholarship fund to honor former graduate Kyle Lake.
Lake, 33-year-old pastor of University Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, was electrocuted Oct. 30 after he grabbed a microphone while in a baptistry full of water. More than 800 people witnessed the event, which happened on the same weekend as Baylor University's homecoming.
“Kyle Lake was a bright light and a vital voice in the church,” said Steve Wells, president of the Truett Alumni Association and senior pastor at South Main Baptist Church in Houston. “His work among college students will affect churches around the world as young men and women carry their experiences from University Baptist to the far corners of the globe.
“We concluded the best way to ensure Kyle's continuing presence was through the creation of an endowed scholarship,” said Wells.
Lake's family will set the guidelines for choosing recipients of the scholarship, according to Wells. Donations can be made through the Baylor Development Office.
Lake earned a bachelor's degree from Baylor in 1994 and a master of divinity degree from Truett in 1997. He was the author of two books, Understanding God's Will and [Re]understanding Prayer. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, also a Baylor graduate, and three children.
