FRESNO, Calif. (ABP) — Valton Prince, who directed what is now the discipleship training ministry for the California Southern Baptist Convention, died of cancer July 22. He was 87.
Prince worked for the California convention from 1965 to 1981. He also directed education and music for the Los Angeles Southern Baptist Association and was minister of education at churches in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and California.
Wendell Foss, a retired CSBC associate executive director, said Prince's dedication to ministry was evident in his family life and continued past his retirement. Even in hospice care, Foss said, Prince would review the list of those at his church in need of ministry and make assignments to the pastoral-care team.
“The three things one could be sure of in Valton Prince's life were his faith in God, love for his wife and a desire to serve,” Foss said in a press statement. “Valton was a servant of God who was faithful to the end. He finished the course well.”
A native of Oklahoma, Prince graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla., and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bea, three nephews and their families, and a brother-in-law.
