JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (ABP) — Associated Baptist Press is publishing a new series of syndicated columns, starting with Baptist ethicists David Gushee and Elizabeth Newman.
The new columns are among several changes announced for ABP's website, ABPNews.com, including a daily collection of news stories from other publications, called “News Elsewhere,” and a posting service for news releases from ministry partners, called “Ministry Wire.”
Gushee and Newman will both write on cultural and ethical issues on alternating Tuesdays, with Gushee's column beginning Sept. 19 and Newman's Sept. 26. The columns are available for reproduction and distribution by Christian and secular publications that subscribe to ABP.
Gushee is professor of moral philosophy and senior fellow of the Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership at Union University. He is author of nine books, including the award-winning Kingdom Ethics with Glen Stassen, published by InterVarsity Press. He also is editor of the Jossey-Bass “Enduring Questions in Christian Life” series.
Newman is professor of theology and ethics at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. She serves as president of the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, region-at-large, and is on the steering committee for Young Scholars in the Baptist Academy. Her book, Untamed Hospitality: Welcoming God and Other Strangers, published by Brazos Press, is due out in 2007.
“ABP has been known over its 16-year history for providing credible and compelling news and information,” said Greg Warner, ABP's executive editor. “The addition of Dave Gushee and Beth Newman as the first among several new syndicated columnists ensures that ABP will continue to provide the freshest, most compelling voices in contemporary Baptist life and beyond. By providing ABP consumers with these new perspectives, ABP hopes in part to help reclaim the good name and reputation of Baptists in the public arena.”
ABP publishes more than 600 news and feature stories each year, written by ABP reporters and a network of other journalists. “News Elsewhere” provides links to other stories about faith, religion, public policy, missions and ministry, gathered from print, broadcast and Internet outlets around the world.
“Ministry Wire,” which will debut Oct. 2, will publish unedited news releases from educational institutions, social-service agencies, publishing companies, and other ministry partners. “As a part of our mission,” Warner said, “ABP is committed to advancing the ministry of other Baptist organizations.”
Associated Baptist Press is the premier independent source of news and information by, for and about Baptists.
