RAVENDEN, Ark. (ABP) — An Arkansas Baptist disaster-relief volunteer was killed and two others injured in an automobile accident while returning home Feb. 3 from aiding victims of a Missouri ice storm.
Roger Glenn Loyd, 47, died at a hospital in Walnut Ridge, Ark., from injures he received in the accident that occurred near Ravenden, Ark. Loyd was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Osceola, Ark.
Also injured in the accident were Richard Roberts, pastor of Yarbro Baptist Church in Blytheville, Ark., and Scottie Pardue, a member of Roberts' church. All three were part of the Mississippi County Baptist Association's disaster-relief unit.
According to Bill Cantrell, disaster-relief coordinator for the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, the accident occurred on U.S. Highway 63 after Roberts, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle, causing the truck to flip at least twice. Loyd was ejected and Roberts was pinned in the vehicle. Pardue exited the automobile on his own.
Loyd was transported to the Walnut Ridge hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Glenn was a dynamic guy,” Cantrell said. “He had a great heart and wanted to help others in need.”
According to Cantrell, Loyd served as a chaplain and a volunteer for the Mississippi County disaster-relief group. Loyd had recently ministered in New Orleans with the Arkansas Baptist Builders. Noting that Loyd used all of his five-week vacation last year to help with disaster relief, Cantrell said, “I wish I had 100 other men like him serving in disaster relief.”
Loyd was a 1978 graduate of Rivercrest High School of Wilson, Ark., and attended the University of Mississippi, where he was in the Naval ROTC.
He was employed at Cyro Industries for 20 years and was chosen as Cyro's Employee of the Year in 1998.
He was a volunteer jail chaplain, a member of the Gideon Fellowship and frequently led music and sang solos for his church.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; two daughters, Jessica Loyd of Wilson, Ark. and Michele Isbell of Conway, Ark.; his parents, Barbara and J.C. Loyd of Wilson, Ark.; two sisters, Robin Loyd of Osceola and Donna Hilton of Arkadelphia, Ark.; and one granddaughter, Kauri Rose.
