CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (ABP) — Doris Wefwafwa, a student-assistant volleyball coach at Campbellsville University and former volleyball All-American, died unexpectedly Dec. 10. Wefwafwa, a resident of Kenya, was 34.
Wefwafwa died at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, Ky., after a brief illness. She had been scheduled to graduate Dec. 14 with a degree in social work.
In 1998, while playing volleyball in Kenya, Wefwafwa was recognized by local volleyball polls as one of the best “attackers” in the world. She played for the Kenyan volleyball team in the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Wefwafwa transferred to the 2,400-student university in 2006 after attending Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. She led Campbellsville to a 10-0 conference championship in 2006 and was ranked second nationally in kills per game in the NAIA last season, averaging 5.63 per game. She was also the 2006 Mid-South Conference Volleyball Player of the Year.
Randy LeBleu, the head volleyball coach at Campbellsville University, called Wefwafwa “an amazing person.”
“In her short time with us at Campbellsville, she touched many people,” he said. “Even if your day was not going very well, she could make you smile or comfort you with a hug. A hug from Doris was not just courtesy. She had feeling with every hug.
“She will be missed, but we will all remember how she could light up a room with her smile. I am just deeply saddened by her leaving us so soon.”
Wefwafwa was the daughter of two pastors, Moses Wanyama Wefwafwa and the late Rose Nabucha Wefwafwa.
The time and place of a memorial service has yet to be announced.
Campbellsville University is affiliated with the Kentucky Baptist Convention.
