An ecumenical woman-to-woman missions organization with Baptist ties dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable women around the world has been honored as one of its local community’s best businesses.
Global Women’s international partnerships in areas including sex trafficking, clean water, maternal health, education and economic development earned the 2015 Best of Pelham Award for nonprofit organizations in Pelham, Ala., a suburb of Birmingham.
Global Women was founded in December 2001 as a way for Christian women to network and mentor younger women through “shared learning and service.” Organizers included former national leaders of Woman’s Missionary Union, auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention. Trudy Johnson, the group’s associate director, worked 17 years on the staff of WMU before joining Global Women in 2007. Cindy Dawson, a former Cooperative Baptist Fellowship missionary, resigned in October 2014 after eight years. A search for her successor is progressing.
