A half-day event is scheduled July 30 in Northfield, Minn., to promote Baptist opposition to Nov. 6 ballot initiatives in several states asking voters to define marriage as a legal union of one man and one woman.
The “Baptists Vote No!” event is part of a larger movement in Minnesota supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples and part of the “Many Voices, One Love” campaign created by the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, Alliance of Baptists and Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America.
The July 30 event at Northfield’s First United Church of Christ precedes the BPFNA’s weeklong Peace Camp, scheduled July 30-Aug. 4 at St. Olaf College in Northfield. AWAB’s board of directors will hold its summer meeting during the camp July 30-Aug. 1.
The “Many Voices, One Love” campaign held a similar event in February at Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C., to oppose an amendment to that state’s constitution banning gay marriage. North Carolina voters overwhelmingly adopted the amendment, but campaign organizers said they were pleased by the coalition of religious leaders that came together seeking its defeat in the weeks leading up to the election.
