The first woman to lead the Baptist Union of Great Britain has requested prayer after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Lynn Green, elected last year as general secretary of the 2,100-church union founded in 1832, says a lump detected at a very early stage is small and slow growing. The prognosis for a full recovery is good, according to the Baptist Times.
“The diagnosis came out of the blue, but as a family we are very thankful for the screening process, which has picked this up early,” Green said. “As a result the prognosis is very good, but clearly we would value prayer for a speedy recovery, and for wisdom and strength as I balance commitments.”
Green is scheduled to undergo surgery in a few days followed by radiation therapy. If all goes well, she plans to participate in the Baptist Assembly scheduled May 10-11.
An ordained minister, Green previously served British Baptists as regional minister with the Southern Counties Baptist Association team and as minster at Wokingham Baptist Church. She is married, the mother of two and cares for two foster children.
