DALLAS (ABP) — For the first time in the history of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, ethnic minorities chair all seven of the appointed committees.
The convention's officers, led by BGCT president Ken Hall, made the appointments to integrate minorities into the convention's work, they said. “Until we create leadership opportunities for our broadest element — our diversity — we are not addressing it,” Hall said.
Almost half of Texas' 20 million people are nonwhites.
Ethnic minorities lead the BGCT committee on committees, committee on credentials, committee on convention arrangements, committee on the order of business, committee on resolutions, committee on memorials and committee on nominations for coordinating boards.
Ethnic minorities also comprise more than one third of the committee members. And this year is the first year that the BCGT has elected two racial minorities as officers and that an African-American chairs the executive board.
