The Baptist World Alliance is calling for financial contributions to help communities in Mexico devastated by hurricane-related flooding and mudslides.
The Mexican government reported that as many as 80 people have died as the result of hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid, and that close to 60 are missing, according to news reports. Thousands of vacationers and other visitors are reportedly stuck in Acapulco.
The flooding, which has submerged homes and businesses, was generated by two major storm systems that converged on Mexico’s Gulf and Pacific coasts. Both systems were tropical storms that grew into hurricanes — Ingrid and Manuel — at different stages before or while making landfall Wednesday and today.
In a Thursday statement, BWA General Secretary Neville Callam mourned the “loss of life, destruction of property and displacement of persons that are occurring on a massive scale” in Mexico. “We want to remind those who have been affected that we are standing with them in prayer and financial support.
