A Cooperative Baptist Fellowship pastor was among about 50 clergy arrested at the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., Jan. 29.
Wayne Weathers, pastor of Vision of Hope Baptist Church in Sicklerville, N.J., was among a group of faith leaders demanding the Senate stop additional funding for ICE. They were part of a larger group that gathered Thursday morning at Lutheran Church of the Reformation for a press conference.
Advance publicity for that event said the goal was “demanding that the Senate uphold the Constitution, reject additional funding for ICE, and act on behalf of the common good.” This event was an outgrowth of a Sunday night interfaith prayer call in support of Minneapolis. That call garnered more than 10,000 participants.
A smaller group of about 50 went to the Senate office building Thursday afternoon, where they knelt down and sang. They were promptly arrested by Capitol Police and taken to another location for booking. All were released that evening.
Weathers told BNG he participated in the action because he believes senators must act to stop the aggression of the Trump administration. The group, he said, was “standing against the injustice of ICE.”
