Family Mission Week adds new dimension

NewsReligious Herald  |  April 13, 2005

Already a strong week of mission projects, worship and Bible study, Family Mission Week takes on a new dimension this year in response to families who want to learn and play together.

A “Family Track” has been added to the week, sponsored annually by the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. This year's event is set for July 11-15 at Eagle Eyrie Baptist Conference Center.

The Family Track is aimed at families wanting to remain together for mission projects, worship and Bible study.

Jon Messer, a former family ministry consultant for the Virginia Baptist Mission Board, will lead the morning and evening sessions for families as they explore “Faith@ Work.” Maximum registration for the Family Track is 60 persons.

As usual, youth in grades 8-12 will participate in mission projects in the greater Lynchburg area while second through seventh graders remain on campus for interactive Bible learning, missions activities and worship and a “meet the missionaries” session featuring workers from the Caribbean, Italy and the Virginia Baptist Children's Home and Family Services.

Jason Smith, Christian social ministries innovator with Woman's Missionary Union of Virginia and the Virginia Baptist Mission Board, will lead an adult session on “A Christian Response to Hunger.”

Steve Sumerel, family ministries consultant for the North Carolina Baptist Convention, will share leadership of the adult learning/exploration sessions with Smith. Sumerel's presentations “10 Things to Do to Demonstrate Your Value of Families” and “Media: For Us or Against Us,” round out the sessions for adults who remain on campus and aren't part of a work team.

“Our church has been involved in Family Mission Week for years,” said one participant from Jarrett who has served as a youth faculty coordinator. “Family Mission Week is tradition in our church's life.

“I want my grandchildren to experience all the wonderful happenings of Family Mission Week.”

The cost for Family Mission Week is $45. Check www.vbmb.org under “glocal missions” for additional information and appropriate registration forms.
