HOUSTON (ABP) — Former Southern Baptist Convention president Ed Young
is recovering from triple-coronary-bypass surgery May 27.
According to media reports, Young, pastor of Second Baptist Church in Houston, went to the hospital earlier in the week after feeling tightness in his chest. A stress test indicated he needed surgery. Surgeons at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, who worked 90 minutes to route blood flow around the clogged arteries, said the procedure went well and Young is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days.
Members of Second Baptist — a congregation spread out in five locations and claiming a combined membership of 53,000 — will be updated on his condition this Sunday.
Young, 73, was president of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1993 and 1994. He has had heart trouble before. In 1988 he had angioplasty to open a clogged heart artery.
