CHURCH EVENT
L
ottie Moon, the namesake of Southern Baptist’s offering for international missions and a pioneer of mission work in China, has significant ties to the small central Virginia town of Scottsville. Her parents, Edward Harris Moon and Anna Maria Barclay Moon, were founders of Scottsville Baptist Church in 1840, a time of great progress in southern Albemarle County. In that same year Charlotte Digges Moon was born at the family home on “Viewmont” planation, halfway between Scottsville and Charlottesville. As Scottsville Baptist makes plans to observe its 170th anniversary in 2010, Lottie Moon will be a focal subject of the celebration with a formal dedication of a History Room at the church, according to Robert Spencer, church historian. Enhancing this project has been a recent gift to the church of a private collection of Lottie Moon memorabilia presented by Jill Johnson Harwood of Jamestown, North Carolina. As daughter of the late Gilbert L. and Frances (Nelms) Johnson and granddaughter of the late Charles B. and Ruth (Allen) Johnson, Harwood has roots in the Scottsville Church. She has been assembling this collection from the time she was in the Girls’ Auxiliary, an organization of Woman’s Missionary Union. This collection will become part of the display already at Scottsville Church, including the Victorian parlor furniture from the Moon residence at Viewmont.
