CHARLESTON, S.C. (ABP) — A former administrative assistant at a South Carolina Baptist Convention church is back in Charleston to face allegations that she embezzled more than $30,000 from the church's bank accounts.
Kristin Barnes Warren is accused of forging the signatures of church leaders at Harbor Light Baptist Church between November 2003 and March 2006. Warren had worked at the church for two-and-a-half years but was not a member of the congregation.
Sheriff's deputies in DeKalb County, Ga., arrested Warren on a fugitive warrant May 2. Police had been searching for her since last year, when she apparently fled to Georgia. Bail is set at $50,000.
A Charleston newspaper, The Post and Courier, reported that Warren also has a 1994 conviction for breach of trust with fraudulent intent and convictions for writing fraudulent checks in 1994 and 1997.
Founded in 2000, Harbor Light Baptist Church has 132 members. The interim pastor is James Cole.
