In reference to those who felt the need to write an open letter chastising Dr. [Cecil] Sherman for his remarks at the CBF General Assembly, I would like to remind each of the letter's signers that Dr. Sherman has never defined himself by “old rhetoric” and has shown the way to move on in his life as a new creation with each new event in his life.
I'm not exactly sure what the letter was trying to say beyond that the signers are tired of hearing about a tremendously difficult time in the life of Southern Baptists. That time has required a self re-definition for many of us that is yet ongoing. If the signers of the letter feel that the events of which Dr. Sherman referred are in the past, I would encourage them to consider the millions given to the SBC by those who are refused appropriate representation in the SBC because they are members of the Baptist General Association of Virginia.
I don't find it necessary to engage the argument often, but every time I am confronted with someone else's definition of Christian I am compelled to consider my stance. I question my understanding of my beliefs because I seek for my beliefs to be my own. They can only be my own when they come from my heart and understanding, not my memory. I have been blessed to be taught by Dr. Sherman and I counsel you to spend your time getting the log out of your own eyes, for his are very clear.
