DEATH

William Hugh Bumgarner, pastor of Midway Baptist Church, Amherst, Va., died Oct. 6 at the age of 87. He had also served as pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Willow Spring, N.C.; Calvary Baptist Church, Concord, Va.; Madison Heights (Va.) Baptist Church, where he was named pastor emeritus; and as interim of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church, Lynchburg, Va. He is predeceased by his wife, Virginia Ardie Pless Bumgarner. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Jean Bumgarner Mas­sie; a son, Alan Hugh Bumgarner; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Oct. 10 at Madison Heights Baptist Church.

Kudos

Sterling Severns, pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., was the recipient of a grant by the Lilly Endow­ment 2013 National Clergy Renewal Program, allowing congregations to support their pastors with the gift of extended time away from ministerial roles. Grants were awarded to 87 congregations in 31 states and the District of Columbia.

Appomattox Baptist Association raised $8,000 for a Stop Hunger Now event, packing more than 33,000 meals for school children in Africa. About 100 people participated in the event, packing 275 meals per minute.
